    What are dental prosthetic restorations?

Dental prosthetics is the specialty that replaces or restores missing or damaged teeth, restoring chewing function, phonetics and the natural aesthetics of your smile. A prosthetic restoration can be removable (full or partial denture) or fixed (crown, bridge, veneer, implant-supported). At BioEstetic Dent, we focus on high-quality fixed prosthetics because they offer the comfort and naturalness closest to natural teeth.

A dental crown is the most common fixed prosthetic restoration. It fully covers the prepared (trimmed) tooth and restores its shape, size, strength and aesthetic appearance. Crowns are recommended when a tooth has sustained extensive fractures, large caries treated endodontically, enamel deterioration or when a change in colour and shape is needed for anterior teeth. The crown is permanently fixed to the tooth stub with adhesive or conventional cement, becoming an integral part of the tooth.

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic construction that replaces one or more missing teeth by resting on adjacent teeth (abutment teeth) or implants. The abutment teeth are prepared and will carry crowns connected to the intermediate elements (pontic), thus reconstructing the dental arch. A traditional bridge on natural teeth is a well-proven solution, though a dental implant — when possible — is preferred because it does not require preparing healthy neighbouring teeth.

Complete oral rehabilitation (full mouth rehabilitation) involves restoring all or most teeth, often combining implants, crowns, bridges, endodontic and periodontal treatments. It is indicated in cases of severe bruxism, advanced acid erosion, multiple tooth loss or severely worn teeth. A complete rehabilitation requires interdisciplinary planning, occlusion registration and phased prosthetic construction.

At BioEstetic Dent, every prosthetic case begins with a complete consultation: occlusal analysis, clinical photographs, digital or conventional impressions, X-rays and, when necessary, CBCT. The treatment plan is presented transparently, with material options, costs and stages clearly explained. We collaborate with carefully selected dental laboratories for material quality and precision.

Why choose prosthetics at BioEstetic Dent Cluj-Napoca?

Choosing the right clinic for prosthetic work is an important decision. A crown or dental bridge is a long-term investment, and the quality of execution determines durability, comfort and aesthetics for years to come. At BioEstetic Dent, prosthetics are performed by experienced clinicians with ongoing training in modern techniques, including operative microscope prosthetics, digital impressions and DSD (Digital Smile Design).

The operative microscope in prosthetics is a key differentiator. When preparing crowns and bridges, visualization at high magnification allows precise cervical margins (supragingival or juxtagingival), reducing the risk of gingival irritation, secondary leakage and long-term periodontal problems. Patients who benefit from microscope prosthetics receive restorations with finer, better-adapted margins, resulting in increased durability and superior aesthetics.

The materials used at BioEstetic Dent are selected from among the best available on the European market: high-translucency monolithic zirconia or layered with feldspathic ceramic, pressed ceramic (feldspathic or leucite), CAD/CAM materials (zirconia, glass ceramic) and noble alloys for quality metal-ceramic crowns are chosen according to the tooth's location, aesthetic requirements and occlusal forces. We do not compromise material quality to reduce costs.

Communication with the dental laboratory is essential. We work with top dental technicians, providing clinical photographs, colour records with VITA guides and detailed characterisation instructions. This close collaboration produces prosthetic restorations that naturally harmonise with neighbouring teeth and the patient's complexion, without the artificial look of over-white or overly uniform crowns.

Guarantee and periodic review are part of the BioEstetic Dent standard. At every check-up we verify margin integrity, gingival health, occlusion and the aesthetic condition of restorations. Minor issues — such as a small ceramic chip or the need for occlusal adjustment — are addressed promptly before they become bigger problems.

    Types of prosthetic restorations

From single crowns to full-mouth rehabilitation on implants — all performed with premium materials and precision technique.

    Zirconia crowns

Zirconia crowns are the current standard in modern prosthetics. Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a high-strength, biocompatible, metal-free ceramic material with natural translucency and long-term colour stability. Varieties include monolithic (fully milled zirconia, ideal for posterior teeth with high forces) and layered (zirconia covered with feldspathic ceramic, for anterior aesthetics).

    • Exceptional mechanical strength — will not fracture under normal chewing forces
    • Metal-free — no grey line at the gumline, no allergic reactions
    • Natural translucency — mimics the structure of dental enamel
    • Superior biocompatibility — gum tissue responds favourably
    • Colour stability — shade does not change over time

    Ceramic crowns (feldspathic / pressed)

Feldspathic and pressed ceramic (e.max, IPS Empress) offer the highest possible aesthetics, replicating the translucency and fluorescence of natural enamel. They are indicated primarily for frontal teeth and premolars where aesthetics are paramount. The technician manually layers the ceramic or it is pressed at high temperatures, achieving a surface texture and colour depth that is hard to match.

    • Maximum aesthetics — natural translucency and fluorescence
    • Smooth surface, resistant to tartar and staining
    • Stable colour, without artificial opalescence
    • Ideal for veneers and anterior crowns
    • Biocompatible — no gingival reactions

    Fixed dental bridges

A fixed dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to prepared neighbouring teeth or implants. It is permanently fixed in the oral cavity, non-removable by the patient. Modern bridges are made of zirconia or pressed ceramic for optimal aesthetics. Indications and material are determined by the number of missing teeth, the condition of abutment teeth, occlusion and the patient's aesthetic expectations.

    • Fixed solution — no discomfort of removable dentures
    • Effectively restores chewing and phonetics
    • Natural aesthetics with ceramic materials
    • Good durability with correct hygiene
    • Relatively short completion time (1–2 weeks with temporary restoration)

    Implant crowns and superstructures

An implant crown is the ideal solution for replacing a missing tooth without affecting neighbouring teeth. It consists of the prosthetic abutment, fixed to the implant, and the crown itself, made of zirconia, ceramic or CAD/CAM material. The implant superstructure can be single, splinted (implant bridge) or bar-retained (hybrid prosthesis). All-on-4 and All-on-6 solutions allow complete rehabilitation of an edentulous jaw with a minimum number of implants.

    • Does not sacrifice healthy neighbouring teeth
    • Bone stimulation — prevents alveolar bone resorption
    • Excellent stability and comfort
    • Aesthetics identical to natural teeth
    • Lifetime durability with correct maintenance

    Full mouth rehabilitation

Full mouth rehabilitation is indicated in patients with severe tooth wear (bruxism, acid erosion), multiple edentulism, diastemas, advanced malocclusions or globally compromised aesthetics. Treatment is interdisciplinary — involving implantology, periodontics, endodontics and orthodontics depending on the case — and concludes with fixed prosthetic restorations on all teeth or implants. Aesthetically guided rehabilitation (DSD) allows the patient to see the final result before treatment begins.

    • Complete transformation — function and aesthetics fully restored
    • Digital planning — patient approves final appearance before treatment
    • Simultaneous resolution of all dental problems
    • Improved quality of life — eating, phonetics, self-confidence
    • Lasting results with premium materials

    Microscope-assisted prosthetics

Operative microscopy applied in prosthetics achieves a level of precision impossible with the naked eye or standard surgical loupes. At BioEstetic Dent, tooth preparation, verification of provisional and definitive crown marginal fit, cementation and occlusal control are performed at 8–20× magnification. The result is a precise cervical margin, uniform cement space and harmonious gingival integration.

    • Ultra-precise cervical margins — fine and well-adapted
    • Reduced risk of secondary leakage and recurrent caries
    • Long-term gingival health — no subgingival irritation
    • Precision provisional crowns for aesthetic testing
    • Superior standard of care in prosthetics

    Provisional (temporary) prostheses

During fabrication of definitive restorations, patients receive provisional crowns or bridges made of composite resins or PMMA. These protect the prepared stubs, maintain aesthetic and functional space and allow testing of the shape, size and occlusion of the future definitive restoration. High-quality provisionals are more than a waiting solution: they are a prototype of the final work.

    • Protects prepared teeth during treatment
    • Tests aesthetics and occlusion before the definitive restoration
    • Functional comfort during treatment
    • Allows adjustments before finalising restorations
    • Basis for communication with the dental laboratory

Zirconia vs ceramic: how do we choose the right material?

Material selection is one of the key decisions in prosthetic case planning. There is no universal material: each has specific indications, advantages and limitations, and the prosthodontist adapts the choice to the clinical context of each patient.

Monolithic high-translucency zirconia (e.g. Katana HT, IPS e.max ZirCAD) is indicated for posterior crowns, 3–4 unit bridges and implant crowns with high strength requirements. Its fracture resistance of 900–1200 MPa makes it virtually impossible to fracture under normal chewing. Modern translucency also makes it aesthetic in the anterior region, but without matching feldspathic ceramic for extreme aesthetic cases.

Pressed ceramic (IPS e.max Press) or layered feldspathic ceramic is preferred for veneers and anterior crowns where mimicry is paramount. The translucency, fluorescence and surface characterisation achieved manually by a skilled technician produce restorations practically indistinguishable from natural teeth. The limitation is lower mechanical strength, which is why it is not indicated for molars under active bruxism.

Metal-ceramic crowns (VMK) remain a relevant option in some situations — more modest budgets, long bridges on natural teeth or cases with limited occlusal clearance — but the clinical trend is towards all-ceramic restorations. At BioEstetic Dent, we recommend metal-ceramic only when there are clear clinical indications, not as a default solution.

CAD/CAM glass ceramic materials (IPS e.max CAD, Celtra Press) combine increased strength over classic feldspathic ceramic with excellent aesthetics and can be milled quickly in-office or in the laboratory. They are an excellent option for single crowns on devitalised teeth, for areas with limited access or for long-term provisional crowns.

Implant crowns — aesthetics, function and longevity

The implant crown completes the implantological treatment and is, from a prosthetic standpoint, the most sophisticated single-unit restoration. The implant-crown system must simultaneously meet mechanical requirements (implant-abutment connection strength, distribution of occlusal forces), biological requirements (gingival integration, periimplant bone health) and aesthetic requirements (gingival contour, harmony with neighbouring teeth, crown colour).

At BioEstetic Dent, the implant superstructure is planned before implant insertion — a 'backward planning' philosophy that ensures the implant is placed where the crown needs it, not the other way around. This involves occlusal study, surgical template (drill guide) and constant communication between surgeon, prosthodontist and technician.

The prosthetic abutment can be standard (titanium, from the implant system kit) or customised (custom abutment of milled CAD/CAM zirconia or titanium), precisely adapted to the gingival contour and implant angulation. Custom zirconia abutments offer superior gingival aesthetics over titanium in the anterior region, avoiding metal transparency through thin gingival tissue.

The implant crown can be cemented on the abutment or screw-retained. The screw-retained solution is preferred in modern implant prosthetics because it allows disassembly without damage, access to the connection for hygiene and flexibility in case of complications. Cementation is simple and aesthetic, but subgingival excess cement can trigger periimplantitis if not completely removed.

Multiple implant rehabilitations (All-on-4, All-on-6, implant-supported bridges) follow the same precision principles, on a larger scale. The definitive superstructure can be monolithic zirconia (hybrid construction with titanium or full zirconia), the ideal material for strength and aesthetics in complete rehabilitations. At BioEstetic Dent, every rehabilitation is fully planned digitally before execution.

Complete oral rehabilitation — transformation through planning

Complete oral rehabilitation is the most complex service in dental prosthetics and, at the same time, the most transformative. Patients who reach complete rehabilitation usually have a long story: years of untreated bruxism, delayed multiple tooth loss, acid erosion from reflux or acidic diet, or simply dental anxiety that prevented preventive treatments in time.

The first step in a complete rehabilitation case is comprehensive diagnosis: clinical and facial photographs, study impressions, articulator mounting, occlusal analysis, X-rays and CBCT where necessary. Occlusal analysis is fundamental — complete rehabilitation essentially means reconstructing the entire occlusal scheme, not just placing individual crowns.

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is the most powerful communication tool in aesthetic rehabilitations. Through photographic and videographic analysis of the smile and face, the clinician digitally designs the new smile, considering lip line, labial support, facial centre and tooth proportions. The patient approves the design, which becomes a guide for the dental technician and clinician.

Treatment phasing varies: some cases can be rehabilitated in 2–3 stages over several months, others require preliminary treatments (implants with osseointegration period, periodontal treatment, alignment orthodontics). Provisional crowns play an essential role — the patient wears the prototype of the final restoration for 4–8 weeks, provides aesthetic and functional feedback, and the clinician and technician adjust the design before finalisation.

Materials for complete rehabilitation are chosen for maximum longevity: layered monolithic zirconia for aesthetically important areas, full monolithic zirconia for high-force areas, titanium or zirconia for implant support structures. Guarantee and post-treatment maintenance are planned from the outset — the patient knows their investment will be monitored and protected long-term.

Caring for prosthetic restorations — tips for longevity

Quality prosthetic restorations can last 15–20 years or more with correct care. Rigorous oral hygiene is the first and most important factor. Brushing at least twice a day with an appropriately sized toothbrush (electric or manual), fluoride toothpaste and the use of dental floss or an oral irrigator are mandatory. Under a dental bridge, special floss threaders or interdental brushes are necessary to clean under the pontic.

Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods that can overload the crown or bridge: crushed ice, very hard bread crust, sticky sweets (caramel, resins). Zirconia crowns are strong, but layered ceramic can chip under extreme point loads. Report immediately any change in occlusion, pain on chewing or change in appearance.

Bruxism (nocturnal teeth grinding) is a major risk factor for prosthetic restorations. If you brux, your clinician will recommend a night guard. Wearing the guard significantly extends the lifespan of crowns and bridges and protects both restorations and natural teeth and implants.

Regular 6-monthly review visits include checking prosthetic restorations: condition of margins, periprothetic gingiva, occlusion and any necessary adjustments. Professional cleaning (scaling, prophylaxis) is mandatory for maintaining gingival health around crowns and bridges. Tartar accumulating on margins can trigger gingival inflammation and, over time, affect the periodontal health of abutment teeth.

Home whitening products (bleaching gel, peroxide mouthwashes) do not change the colour of zirconia or ceramic crowns. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth after prosthetic restorations are placed, discuss with your clinician: preventive whitening before fabricating restorations is sometimes preferable, so that the restoration shade matches the newly whitened natural teeth.

Crown and prosthetic restoration prices in Cluj-Napoca

The cost of prosthetic restorations varies depending on the type of restoration (single crown, bridge, implant-supported, complete rehabilitation), the material chosen (monolithic zirconia, pressed ceramic, metal-ceramic), the complexity of the case and the number of teeth involved. At BioEstetic Dent, prices are transparent and communicated before treatment begins.

As a general guide, a monolithic zirconia crown costs less than a layered ceramic or pressed ceramic crown, which involves more manual work from the dental laboratory. Implant-supported restorations are more costly due to the complexity of the custom CAD/CAM abutment and superstructure. Complete rehabilitations are assessed globally, with a phased financial plan.

At the initial consultation you will receive a complete itemised estimate. We offer flexible payment options — including the possibility of phasing treatment — to make quality prosthetics accessible. We do not reduce material or technical quality to lower price; instead, we plan treatment together so the budget is managed efficiently.

Investing in a quality prosthetic restoration is always more cost-effective long-term than cheap solutions that need redoing in 2–3 years. A quality zirconia crown, made under the microscope with certified materials, can last 15–20 years. Calculated as cost per year, the difference versus a cheap crown becomes minimal, and the comfort and absence of complications are incomparable.

Cluj-Napoca is one of Romania's most important medical centres with a diverse dental offering. Choosing the right clinic for prosthetic work can be difficult — advertising from many practices promises excellence, but real quality varies significantly. At BioEstetic Dent, we choose to demonstrate quality through documented results, process transparency and the technical standards we maintain.

Our patients come not only from Cluj-Napoca and Cluj County but also from other counties and the Romanian diaspora. Many choose to have prosthetic treatments in Romania compared to their country of residence, comparing prices, material quality and clinical competence. At BioEstetic Dent, fair pricing, European-certified materials and microscope technique make the trip fully justified.

BioEstetic Dent is located in Cluj-Napoca, accessible from both the centre and peripheral neighbourhoods. Appointments can be made by phone, through the online form or through scheduling platforms. The initial prosthetic consultation lasts 45–60 minutes and includes a complete examination, photographs and an orientative treatment plan.

We offer integrated services: there is no need to visit different clinics for consultation, radiology, implant, endodontics and prosthetics. Everything is coordinated internally, with direct communication between specialist clinicians. This reduces total treatment time, eliminates communication errors and ensures each stage is performed correctly before moving to the next.

Patients from outside Cluj planning extensive prosthetic treatments (complete rehabilitations, multiple implant-supported restorations) benefit from consultation on organising visits: we maximise the number of stages achievable per visit, reduce the number of trips and plan treatment considering the patient's schedule and distance. We are experienced with diaspora patients and know how to manage remote communication (email, WhatsApp, video call) efficiently.
