What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the dental specialty that deals with correcting the position of teeth and occlusion (how teeth close). Orthodontic treatment improves not only the aesthetics of the smile, but also functionality, oral health and quality of life. At BioEstetic Dent, our orthodontic specialists, Dr. Andra Stanciu and Dr. Andaluza Chifa, offer modern orthodontic treatments using advanced technology and innovative techniques.
Common orthodontic problems include: crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, overlaps, protrusion (forward teeth), retrusion (backward teeth) and occlusion problems. Orthodontic treatment can solve all these problems, providing a beautiful and healthy smile. In addition, proper teeth alignment facilitates oral hygiene, reduces the risk of cavities and periodontal disease, and can improve chewing function and speech.
Modern orthodontic treatment uses advanced technology for precise planning and predictable results. 3D scans, digital radiographs and specialized software allow creation of a detailed treatment plan that shows exactly how teeth will look after treatment. This technological approach ensures optimal results and reduces treatment duration, providing patients with a comfortable and efficient experience.

When is orthodontic treatment recommended?
Orthodontic treatment is recommended for a variety of dental and facial problems. For children, orthodontic evaluation should begin at age 7-8, when the first permanent molars appear. This early evaluation allows identification of problems in the early stage and planning of effective treatment. For adults, there is no age limit - anyone can benefit from orthodontic treatment, regardless of age.
Main indications for orthodontic treatment include: crooked or overlapping teeth that affect aesthetics and oral hygiene, large gaps between teeth, dental protrusion or retrusion, occlusion problems that can cause premature tooth wear or joint problems, mouth breathing that can affect jaw development, and speech problems caused by incorrect tooth position. Orthodontic treatment can solve all these problems, improving both appearance and functionality.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
The orthodontic treatment process begins with a detailed consultation where the doctor evaluates dental condition, takes radiographs and photographs, and creates 3D models of the teeth. Based on this evaluation, a personalized treatment plan is developed that takes into account the specific needs of each patient. The plan includes the recommended appliance type, estimated treatment duration and realistic expectations.
After placing the orthodontic appliance, the patient will have periodic check-ups every 4-6 weeks for adjustments. During these visits, the doctor checks treatment progress and makes necessary adjustments to ensure correct tooth movement. For invisible aligners, the patient receives new sets of aligners at regular intervals, each set moving teeth slightly closer to the desired final position.
After completing active treatment, wearing a retainer is essential for maintaining results. The retainer can be fixed (attached to the inside of teeth) or removable (worn at night). Without proper retainer wear, teeth can return to their initial position in a process called relapse. Our team provides clear instructions on retainer wear and schedules check-ups to monitor result stability.
Benefits Beyond Aesthetics
Although many patients seek orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance of their smile, the benefits of this treatment go far beyond aesthetics. Proper teeth alignment facilitates oral hygiene, allowing more effective brushing and flossing. This significantly reduces the risk of cavities, periodontal disease and bacterial plaque formation in hard-to-reach areas.
Orthodontic treatment can improve chewing function, allowing more efficient and comfortable chewing. Correct occlusion reduces premature tooth wear and can prevent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems. In addition, correcting alignment problems can improve speech and can reduce breathing problems, especially mouth breathing in children.
For children and adolescents, orthodontic treatment can guide jaw growth and development, preventing more serious problems in the future. Early treatment can correct space problems, incorrect tooth positioning and occlusion problems, providing better and faster results than treatment in adulthood. Investment in orthodontic treatment is an investment in long-term oral health and quality of life.
