Temporomandibular joint
TMJ Disorders Cluj-Napoca — Diagnosis & Treatment at BioEstetic Dent
Jaw pain, clicking when you open your mouth, chewing limits or tooth-related headaches? At BioEstetic Dent in Cluj-Napoca we assess and treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders with a clear medical approach: diagnosis, occlusion, protective splints and orthodontics when needed.
Not every jaw noise is serious — but pain, locking or tooth wear deserve a specialised consult before they get worse.

What are TMJ disorders?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the lower jaw to the skull, just in front of the ear. It is a complex joint: cartilage disc, chewing muscles, ligaments and a close relationship with occlusion (how the teeth meet). When these elements stop working in harmony, TMJ disorders — also called temporomandibular disorders (TMD) — appear.
Common symptoms include: clicking, crepitus or popping on opening/closing, pain near the ear or temples, limited mouth opening, a “locked” jaw feeling, tension-type headaches, pain on chewing, bruxism (grinding or clenching), and sometimes tinnitus or a blocked-ear sensation.
Causes are often multifactorial: stress and muscle hyperactivity, unbalanced occlusion, missing teeth, poorly adapted prosthetics, trauma, parafunctions, or inflammatory/degenerative joint disease. That is why treatment is not one universal fix, but a plan based on clinical assessment.
At BioEstetic Dent, a TMJ consultation includes history, muscle and joint examination, occlusion assessment and, when needed, imaging (OPG or CBCT). The goal is to separate a mild muscle issue from a joint problem that needs a different protocol — and to avoid unnecessary treatment.
Why choose BioEstetic Dent for TMJ disorders?
Many patients arrive late: they only treat headaches, visit ENT for an “ear” issue, or delay because “it only clicks”. Meanwhile tooth wear, muscle hypertonia and discomfort build up. A TMJ-focused dental evaluation clarifies whether the problem is muscular, occlusal, articular or mixed.
In clinic you have access to digital dental radiology on site — useful when we suspect joint changes, bone loss or when planning splints/orthodontics. We do not guess from a single symptom.
Our orthodontic team can step in when bite or tooth alignment contributes to symptoms. In other cases the solution is conservative: night/relaxation splint, limited occlusal adjustments, posture education and physiotherapy collaboration when needed.
Our approach is stepwise: first symptom control and tooth protection, then cause correction if there is a clear dental cause. We avoid irreversible interventions without a solid diagnosis.
Treatments we offer for TMJ disorders
The plan is adapted to the type of dysfunction: muscular, articular, occlusal or bruxism-related.
TMJ consultation and diagnosis
We assess jaw movements, joint sounds, muscle pain, occlusion and parafunctional habits. We decide if imaging is needed and which treatment is realistic.
- Clear differential diagnosis (muscle vs joint vs occlusion)
- Plain-language explanations
- Stepwise plan without unnecessary steps
- In-clinic imaging when indicated
- Coordination with orthodontic/prosthetic care
Protective splint / occlusal guard
A custom splint (usually worn at night) reduces load on the TMJ and muscles, protects teeth from bruxism wear and can ease symptoms within weeks of correct wear.
- Protection against tooth wear
- Muscle relaxation in many bruxism cases
- Made from individual impression/scan
- Adjustments after delivery
- Reversible, non-invasive option
Occlusion correction and orthodontics
When tooth contacts or malocclusion maintain the disorder, controlled occlusal adjustments or orthodontics (fixed braces, Damon, Invisalign, Spark) may be needed after acute symptoms settle.
- Treats occlusal cause, not only the symptom
- Collaboration with clinic orthodontists
- Fixed or aligner options
- Planning based on TMJ assessment
- Long-term follow-up
Bruxism and pain management
Includes education (avoid excessive gum chewing, awareness of daytime clenching), splint therapy, sometimes physiotherapy/muscle relaxation advice and addressing stress factors where clinically relevant.
- Reduced daytime/night-time clenching load
- Protection of restorations and enamel
- Less muscle pain
- Realistic, staged protocol
- Relapse prevention where possible
Symptoms that deserve a TMJ consultation
Book an assessment if you have pain on opening, a jaw that “jumps” or locks, constant clicking with discomfort, morning headaches, visible tooth wear, frequent filling/veneer fractures, or a feeling that your bite no longer “fits”.
Pain next to the ear without a confirmed ENT infection is a common reason for presentation: it is often referred from the masseter or TMJ. Neck and shoulder pain can also relate to chewing-muscle hypertonia.
Not every click needs aggressive treatment. If there is no pain, functional limit or wear, monitoring may be enough. The decision follows examination — not fear or generic online advice.
If symptoms started after new prosthetics, extractions or braces, mention that at the consult: recent history changes diagnostic priorities.
How treatment unfolds — realistic expectations
First stage is pain and load control: splint, habit hygiene, sometimes short-course anti-inflammatories on indication, simple opening/relaxation exercises. Many patients improve in 2–6 weeks of correct splint wear.
Second stage is correcting dental factors: occlusion, high restorations, missing supporting teeth, need for orthodontics. These are not rushed on an inflamed jaw — we stabilise first.
Severe cases (true lock, suspected disc displacement with major limitation, degenerative disease) may need interdisciplinary care. We explain clearly when dentistry alone is not enough.
Success also depends on compliance: a splint left in a drawer does not treat bruxism. At reviews we adjust contacts and check symptom progress.
TMJ, orthodontics and radiology — the clinical link
Orthodontics can improve occlusion and, indirectly, TMJ comfort — but it is not a magic cure for every jaw pain. At BioEstetic Dent, TMJ assessment informs reasoning before a complex orthodontic plan, especially in adults with symptoms.
Radiology (OPG, sometimes CBCT) helps when we need to see the condyles, asymmetry, bony changes or when planning treatments that change vertical dimension/occlusion. Not every clicking patient needs CBCT; the indication is medical.
If you are already in orthodontic treatment and TMJ pain appears, do not wait until the end to speak up: adjustments and protective splints can be integrated along the way.
You can start with a TMJ consult and, if needed, we guide you to orthodontics, prosthetics or imaging — all within our Cluj-Napoca clinic in Bună Ziua.
Advantages of our approach
Diagnosis before treatment
We do not jump to irreversible solutions. We clarify the dysfunction type and what to try first.
Reversible options first
Splints and conservative care protect teeth and the TMJ without burning bridges.
Multidisciplinary team
Orthodontics, prosthetics and radiology in one clinic — coherent, not fragmented plans.
Clear communication
We tell you what is urgent, what is monitoring and what results are realistic for your case.
Consultation and treatment steps
- 1
History and symptoms
We discuss onset, triggers, bruxism, stress, trauma or recent dental work.
- 2
Clinical TMJ and bite exam
We assess opening, joint sounds, chewing muscles and tooth contacts.
- 3
Imaging (if needed)
OPG or CBCT in clinic only when it adds useful diagnostic or planning information.
- 4
Treatment plan
Splint, conservative measures, adjustments, orthodontics or interdisciplinary care — in stages.
- 5
Review and adjustments
We track progress, adjust the splint/occlusion and decide on further steps.
What you can do at home before the consult
Avoid gum chewing, very hard foods and forced yawning. Prefer bilateral chewing in small bites. Apply moist heat to muscular areas if you have spasm (not on an acutely inflamed joint without medical advice).
Become aware of daytime clenching: tongue on the palate, teeth slightly apart, lips together — rest posture. Reduce late caffeine if bruxism is intense.
Occasional pain relief can help temporarily but does not replace diagnosis. If you have true jaw lock or severe pain, contact us promptly.
Do not yank the jaw or force opening to “put a click back” — you may worsen a disc displacement.
Prices and consultation
Cost depends on complexity: assessment visit, possible radiograph, custom splint, adjustment visits. Orthodontics, if needed, has a separate transparent plan and budget.
We give an estimate after examination, not before — the same symptom can mean a simple splint or a broader plan.

TMJ disorders in Cluj-Napoca — BioEstetic Dent
BioEstetic Dent in Cluj-Napoca (Bună Ziua) offers TMJ assessment, protective splints and coordination with orthodontics and dental radiology in one place.
Patients from Cluj and nearby often present for painful clicking, bruxism with wear or jaw pain after prolonged stress. The first step is a consultation — not a package treatment.
Appointments are by phone, online or contact form. If symptoms are acute, mention that when booking so we can prioritise correctly.
Clinic orthodontists and dentists collaborate when bite and TMJ must be treated together — so alignment is not corrected while ignoring the joint, and vice versa.
